Chrono Trigger: Is It Worth It?
Honestly, I never understood the hype around Chrono Trigger. Granted I was pretty young when the game was released and much more into other types of game. I went through my years not fully grasping what Chrono Tirgger was. I recently picked up a copy of the game and I was a bit surprised. The game plays much more differently then I anticipated, but is it worth it?
Alright so for starters this game plays pretty poorly on PC. You will want a game pad of some kind to be able to fully immerse yourself in the experience. Other than that the game play was not what I was expecting. Instead of random encounters you can actually avoid creatures you would rather not fight. The game is part turn base part real time and gives you the sense of an actual fight. The use of basic attacks, combos, tech, and items adds to the allure of the game. The combat system is pretty easy to pick up and even without a basic tutorial the game gives you an idea of what to do. The story line is really intense, and fast paced. At one point in the story I definitely got confused, but that was what made the story interesting.
Chrono Tirgger is obviously a classic. With tons of fans still holding true to the game even decades after the release. The game is a one parter and fans really want a sequel or at least a full scale remake. After playing it I definitely understand why. The game follows Crono on his quest through time to save the world. Pretty standard Square Enix stuff though, right? The game’s music and sounds will hit you harder than ever before. I mean it, the sound of the clock in the beginning is pleasantly stuck in my head. The music is engaging and falls seamlessly into the background. I think the soundtrack alone gives the game an edge on every other game. Have you already played Chrono Trigger? Let us know in the comments.
Chrono Trigger is definitely one of the best games Square Enix has done. With strict competition it wasn’t easy to say that. The game gives you a sense of wonder and excitement. The story mode is easy to navigate, but also still keeps you guessing. Keep in mind my main issue with the game is how it plays on PC. If you do pick it up for PC and forego the use of a game pad, make sure you use the mouse feature and not the keyboard feature. You will thank me later. The graphics can be swapped up for the full scale classic or a slightly more polished HD remake. The combat system is brilliant with the combos and tech attacks being a huge addition to the game. The turn based fighting style gives you time to strategize, but still moves fast enough to keep you on your feet. You will find yourself fully engaged and wanting much more than the game has to offer. I think that is why the game has been sought after for a sequel/remake. Kingdom Hearts 3 took a long while to come out even though fans showed a lot of interest, and you can read our review and find out if Kingdom Hearts 3 is worth it. I definitely recommend this game to anyone that loves adventure.
