Eden Rising: Is It Worth It?
Open World Tower Defense
Immerse yourself into a beautiful alien wasteland as you protect your base and harvest resources. Eden Rising isn’t the first tower defense game we have ever reviewed, but unlike The Last Friend, it is the first open world tower defense game. With the combat style of an action RPG and the strategy of your favorite tower defense games, Eden Rising takes the cake. Right now there is a free 12-hour version of the game, as well as a paid full version which I thought was more than fair. While there are tons of perks in Eden rising, let’s find out if it is worth your time below.
Tower defense is a small aspect of Eden Rising, but it is a big part of defending your base, which is also called a Crucible, and they are scattered throughout the world. The crucibles have limited power, which means turret placement is critical to your tower defense, also known as a siege. When your base isn’t being invaded by a monster, you can explore the world and get materials to craft better turrets, make armor, consumables, and even different weapons. Eden hosts a bevy of monsters that you will have to fight in an open field or while defending your Crucible. Each turret also has specific uses and deal more damage to particular monsters or have an ability that can hinder them. You will find that out pretty early and adapting to each unique monsters defenses is a difficult task, but with enough practice, it becomes second nature.
Combat in the game is your typical action or combat RPG style. You can lock on to one target and then slash your way through them with basic swings, power swings, and special attacks. You can also jump and ground slam enemies which I found to be very useful when getting swarmed. Other than attacking you can dodge out of your enemies line of fire which is very useful for knockdowns. Sprinting is also a feature in the game and helps you get around faster. Both sprinting and dodging take endurance so plan. Accordingly, I didn’t.
Harvesting is a critical component in the game, as mentioned above, so you will need to go out into the world of Eden and harvest different materials while completing your objectives. You will want to start harvesting early so you can make the necessary upgrades as well as craft turrets and armor. Luckily getting around Eden is a lot easier once you connect the teleporters this makes harvesting a walk in the park if the park was full of monsters. Once your bag gets full, you can go back to base and put it all in storage, or use all your materials to craft the strongest turret the world of Eden has ever seen.
Graphics and Story
I enjoyed the graphics in Eden Rising. The game has such an immersive atmosphere. The sounds are eerie, and while the graphics aren’t hyper-realistic and are more cartoony and polished, they take you into a whole new environment. The story is brief, but it leaves you wanting more. I liked the mysterious vibe I was getting being a lone wanderer on an ancient planet. Your character is traversing this wasteland and learning about the world of Eden as your progress through the story.
